The Thermalright Venomous-X RT CPU heatsink comes with Thermalright's own FDB-1300 fan. Should I use this fan, or instead use a newer PWM controlled fan like the Scythe SlipStream 120 PWN adjustable ?
Specs as follows
Thermalright FDP-1300:
1300rpm, 50 CFM, 24 dbA, NO PWM control.
Scythe Sipstream 120 PWM adjustable :
PWM control with variable RPM ranges (via control knob):
Max.Band 740-1900 rpm, 10-37 dBA, 37-110 CFM
Min.Band 470-1340 rpm, 7-27 dBA, 23-76 CFM
I have an i5-760 CPU and Gigabyte H57M-USB3 motherboard. Moderate overclocking.
Best fan to Thermalright Venomous-X

Scythe fit the Slipstream 120 PWM adjustable as standard to the Yasya and Ninja 3 coolers, so it would be an excellent choice. See the SPCR reviews for details. It's a better choice if you're overclocking, you can have a quiet idle at around 500 rpm and it will automatically handle the heat produced when the system is fully loaded, probably topping out at around 1100/1200 rpm.

Not quite exactly, and however TR fans are usually way noisier than S-Flex "cousins" (which in their turn aren't definitely quieter than Slipstreams).
Please take note that AFAIK no PWM fans may run as slowly as recent PWM Slipstreams do on 4pin headers: if you have not so many 3 pin headers available, it may worth.
So it sounds like the Scythe SlipStream PWM fan is the best best since it can slow down ? But if the Thermalright 1300 rpm fan is inaudible, why run it slower!? I have an Antec Sonata case and my mobo has 4pin CPU fan connector.quest_for_silence wrote:Erelyes wrote:Aren't they the same Sony FDB used in Scythe S-Flex?

Any thoughts on using a fan duct with the Venomous-X (ex. rear exhaust case fan - duct - thermalright heat sink)??
I've one Thermalright FDB 1300 which is very very quiet with 5V/7V trick. I highly recommend you using it with 5V/7V trick before purchasing a new fan. Also, Gigabyte mobo does support 3pin fan control which is able to control Thermalright FDB 1300.
Btw, I've Scythe Gentle Typhoon/Slipstream, and Yateloon. Thermalright FDB 1300 doesn't yield to thses excellent fans in terms of noise performance.
