Panaflo L1A and Overclocked Barton 2500+, Which Heatsink?
After having just purchased an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer for my Radeon 9700 Pro, I would like to find a replacement for the stock HSF that came with my Barton 2500+. I've owned an 80mm Panaflo L1A in the past and am content with it in terms of noise. I've got a couple questions regarding my choice.
First, will a 80mm L1A be enough to sufficiently cool my overclocked Barton (overclocked to 3200+)? If so, what would be the best heatsink to couple with it? I know some of the better heatsinks don't necessarily do well with low speed fans.
Second, would I be better off going with a 92mm Panaflo L1A? How much louder/quieter would it be and would it cool better?
I tried the Thermaltake Silent Boost which cooled my CPU quite well, but it was too loud for me. I'd loved to use the Zalman 7000A-ALCU, but its incompatible with my motherboard. I've already spent more than two hours researching this board for an answer to my question, but I never found anything that helped me with my decision.
Thanks!

I have the same setup
I have the same setup....2500+ to 3200+...I didn't have to increase the voltage so your mileage may vary. At default voltage, a SLK947U + L1A@12v = sufficient. My case has pretty much zero airflow. It's taped up everywhere, and the only exhaust is a SilenX 350W PSU fan. That fans pulls hardly ANY air whatsoever. Temps go up to 55-58 at load with a case temp of 30.
I recommend looking into the "new" thermalright HSF that has the heatpipes on it. It has been recently adapted for socket A. Otherwise, read the reviews on SPCR for info on the Zalman. I can't devolt much or at all with the 947, but you might be able to with the Zalman. Then again, you said you were content with the L1A sound level...so yeah. I hope this helps.

I am exactly in the same boat. I now have a Vantec Aeroflow, which is quiet but not silent. I am OC at 2800+ with Barton 2500+, but wanna do more and was wondering if SLK-800U with Panaflo would be enough?
Also, my case Panaflo is NOT quiet AT ALL. Don't know why, but it's just as loud as my crappy Lian-li case fans!

mandms7: there are some results here which would aid your decision lots.

Oooooops!!!!!!!!!1
chylld,
Can I....... um......... change my mind?
I was unaware of the new Zalman option.

I just picked up a new SP-97 to cool my overclocked Barton and it is working wonders. The only place I found that sells them as of yet is heatsinkfactory.com and they charge pretty hefty but it works really well. I use a 92mm M1A on mine and an L1A should work fine also, just watch those temps at first.
I use an Abit NF7-S and it fit perfect but make sure it will fit yours before buying. Good luck!

I think a Zalman 6500 series (the one shaped lik a Chinese fan, not an Orb) with a PSU like the Seasonic (1x 120mm) exhausting air from on top of the cpu will work even with no fan on the cpu. Cause the spaces between the fins are pointed towards the psu fan. Hardcoreware did that with the 6500 and a dual-fan quiet psu together with an overclocked P4 over 3.0G.
Panaflo L1A and barton overclock
mandms7,
I can tell you that I have a Barton 2500+ overclocked to 3200+, being cooled with a Panaflo L1A and a Thermalright SLK-800, and I've never had a problem with system stability. I've got the L1A hooked up to one of those Zalman fan regulator thingies, and I usually have the knob dialled to "full power" which gives something like 11V. Probably would work at lower voltage, but it's quiet enough for me so I haven't futzed with it. I use the PC for gaming and for serious circuit simulation so the CPU gets a pretty good workout and it is very stable, had it for about 4 months now.

Which size Panaflo L1A are you using?
more detail
More detail on overclocked system: (YMMV)Hey papsmurf,
Which size Panaflo L1A are you using?
Barton XP 2500+ CPU on a KT600 mobo from Albatron
OC'd to 3200+ by changing the FSB to 200
overvolted from 1.65 to 1.7, just because I felt like it
1 80mm Panaflo fan on SLK-800 heatsink
1 80mm Panaflo suspended over GeForce4 Ti4200 card, retrofit w/ Zalman ZM-80 heatsink
GF4 oc'd from 250/446 stock settings to 300/550 (Zalman rocks!)
1 80mm exhaust fan, undervolted
Antec True 430 PSU in Antec 1080 tower case.
2 Maxtor hard drives, 2 optical drives
I run the Panflo's off of full voltage from a Zalman fan-mate, because the PSU fan drowns them out anyways. CPU reading in Sandra says 45 C under load, 37C when idling, that's with a 70F / 20C ambient so adjust upwards accordingly in summer time. I would call this setup "quiet" but not "silent". I keep meaning to hack my PSU fans, duct the CPU, drop the Panaflo voltage & cushion the hard drives, but I guess I'd rather talk about it on the Internet than actually do the work.

With that noise and that amount of noise sources in your box and considering the high power of this system I would recommend that you just buy a Zalman 7000A-AlCu as replacement CPU HSF if it fits your motherboard.
It will be less or same cost as buying a good heatsink and reusing the 80mm L1A and you will get better cooling abilities (or same cooling with less noise).
