Papst 120mm 4412 - what a sweet fan

Post by Katana Man » Tue May 06, 2003 9:09 pm

I've tried a ton of 120mm fans now, and I'm sorry, but the Papst 4412 just plain wins. It is so smooth, so balanced. It does not vibrate at all in your hand. It puts out a lot of air for it's noise, and it's very consistent from 3V all the way up to 12V.

I recently made my "Mean Machine" even better. I yanked out the Panaflo L1A, and Coolcases.com special JMC fan and put the Papst 4412's in. I really don't know how this machine can get much better (air cooled).

I've now tested:
Papst 4412
Coolcase's JMC 120L
EZ Fan FP108MS3
Panaflo L1A
Globe 12L

I just wanted to give you my feedback on the 4412's. Anyone else love Papst as much as me?

hehe placed the order for 120 pabsts and a 92 for the slk900 into directron a few days ago.

I have a feeling's I should just call my upcoming mini modded globalwin the katana's shoulda been machine. Yup, got the modders mesh incoming.

anyway the bits and pieces are coming from all over the US as I type so should have pics to post in a week or two. It's basicly katana's in what appears to be his "dream case" yeah yeah until something better comes along.

Cheers!

I have almost opposite experience myself and I've tried more than a dozen of Papst fans :)

There seems to be quite a lot of unit to unit variation as my 120mm Papst fans have lots of vibrational energy which is easily heard even with rubber isolator mounting.

Which is the reason I'm trying to find a decent Panaflo, but maybe I'm just better of trying to find better units from Papst or trying to modify them more silent?

regards,
halcyon

Hmm, It's interesting that you say that because the listed specs for this fan show the starting voltage as 7V.

I'm sure these fans are quieter than the panaflo at their rated 12V but many many people have reported clicking at low volts (<8V) that my panaflos just do not do. Granted I've only tested my 120mm L1A's down to 5V but they're inaudible to me at that speed anyway.

If only the Papst weren't so damn expensive!

My 120mm Papst fan (I only have one left) also starts at under 5V. This one doesn't click, but I've heard others that do. Luck of the draw perhaps?

Just for the record, the Panaflo FBA08A12L1A fan also shows a starting voltage of 7V... :o

Hi Katana Man - what are the EZ Fan like in comparison (just for the record)?

And I presume on the low volt confusion, you can turn the bus down to 3V on the Papst once they are running, but my guess is they need 6-7V to start?

ps - just opened my eyes and read Al bundy 2 lines above me: seems you probably said what you mean  .

Damn Al, you're right. I should have caught that one. Damn marketers! Actually, your link is for the 80mm fan, not 120mm but the specs are similar.

And both my L1A 'flo's start at 5V no problem. The panaflo 120mm fans are big and heavy compared to the Papst I imagine (since I don't own papst). But my beef with the Papst cost still stands, if only we could find a supplier that offers them for at least the same price as the 'flo's.

I just hooked up a voltmeter to my Zalman ZM-MFC1 rheobus. Even though Zalman's web site says it goes down to 6.5V, mine actually goes down to 4.9V. Papst has no problems starting every time. Absolutely no clicking at any voltage.
(Just to clarify, I bought the 4412 FGL from directron.)

Liquidated, yes, you are definately building my dream case. I'm excited to hear your reports.

dukla2000, the Ezfan was decent, but I'll need more time to review it. The build quality was not good. The thing rattles badly if the fan is not perfectly up and down. Feels like it's about to fall off it's axis. The good news is, it will be mounted perfectly upright in a case, so the rattle should not be an isue. It does make a little more noise than the paspt and is not balanced as well.

It seems like its real random, some Papst 4412 click and others don't. I have two of them, one clicks quite badly and the other runs smooth.

The clicking one is somewhat older but haven't been run all that much more.

No experience with any other 120mm fans except for the Antec stock fan that came with the SLK3700. Loud AND clicking.

What are you using to control the voltages? PWM can cause clicking. I was using a rheostat.

They are both running of the fan only line from the Antec Truepower (gotta replace it soon, to loud) PSU
