How hot is your computer?
I've been looking around and can't seem to get a good base of what temp a comptuer should run at so I thought I'd start a post to see what everyone else's is running at.
Board: Asus P4P800-E Deluxe
Chip: P4 3.0
Average
CPU: 47C
MB: 34C
Peak Loads
CPU: 60C
MB: 40C
Is that good, bad, or average?

Welcome to SPCR, mregg!
Those temperatures look good (to me) if the computer is very quiet. However, if the machine has fans running loudly then something is wrong with the airflow somewhere.
Disclaimer: I'm not sure if Asus temperatures are reported higher or lower than what I'm used to seeing on my own motherboards.

The temps you should worry about are those of your harddrive. It's easier to swap a burnt CPU than to recover the contents of your HD -- it can be a real PITA if you have a lot of important info on it like family pictures, school papers or the like.
My recommendation is to try to keep the HD below 45 degrees C, even though most drives are spec'ed up to 55 degrees C. The other temps -- well, you'll usually notice instability if they're too high, and unless the temp rise is extremely quick (heatsink fell off), there is usually no damage.

My Palomino Athlon on-die temperature has been registering in the 80- to 90-degree-Celsius range constantly for the past two years (folding = pseudo-peak load). Then again, my Celeron 466 measures less than 10 degrees above ambient while folding...
I agree with Pjotor's comments about the hard drive being the most temperature-sensitive device.

My stuff is quite cool-running;
IDLE/LOAD
Proc: 45/49
NB: 40/45
GPU: 35/50
HDD: 30/32
PSU: Outer casing is 40-ish, outgoing air is warm
My whole comp. is something like 16-19dba, estimated, it is watercooled, but only on the CPU.
I do agree that the harddisk is the most critical, so I keep it around that temperature, and try to keep total temperature swings as low as possible.

mregg: I run almost the same MB and Processor as you, but my temperature seems better.
MB: Asus P4C800-E Deluxe
Chip: P4 3.0 (Northwood)
Temp idle: MB 27 C, CPU 31C
Temp load: Mb 30C, CPU 50C
I have 2 120mm fans. Rear@7V and front @5V.
I have the Zalman 7000AlCu @5V to cool the CPU, and AC Ati Silencer 1 to cool my 9800Pro.

Thanks for the replies guys...at least now I'm not worried that I'm running way too hot.
I haven't done a lot of testing on the HD temp (I didn't realize it was this important till I read these posts) but so far its been staying around 40C. I guess thats a little high(?)...I just ordered a second exhaust fan so maybe that'll help...I have a 120mm front intake fan buts way too noisy so I disconnected it (only thing I noticed is that the MB runs a little hotter now...I'm thinking about replacing it with the nexus 120mm one).
I've been thinking about changing out the stock Heatsink and replacing it with this Nexus PHT-3600 (the stock one is also extremely loud). I've been trying to find a review of it on here but there aren't any. Has anyone heard anything about it? (http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/PHT-3600.html)
d-boy: I have that same graphics card too. Could you tell me a little more about what you do to cool since I've noticed mine runs extremely hot to (just by placing my hand above it).

Well first of all, I bought the AC Ati Silencer 1 last week. That was a major improvement in both noise and temp. My MB temp went down about 9 degrees C right away.
Second, I invested in the Antec 3700BQE case as recommended on this site. Seems to have good airflow, even with my fans running at 7V (rear) and 5V (front).
Third, I invested in the Zalman 7000AlCu for the CPU. It cools the CPU good even when running at ~1300rpm, and is also pretty quiet.
Good luck!

mregg, if you look at the "cooling" section you'll find the review of the PHT-3600 here
I also forgot to mention that I ran my other CPU at 60C full load for 14 days without shutting down and no problems. (And I only shut it down to do further mods to quieten - which also managed to bring the temps down a bit )

All at 21 degrees C ambient...
Boot Drive :WD80gig 33-35 degrees C
Storage HD:WD120gig 34-37 degrees C, up to 39 after a few hours solid of PVR running
CPU: averages 35 degrees C, maxes out at 48 under full load after 30 minutes (Zalman 7000AlCu running at ~1300rpm)
System: averages 40 degrees, maxes out at 42 under full load.
Asus P4R800VDelux, Celeron 2.66, 512meg ram. elcheapo Aopen case, Enermax Noisetaker 370W, and one 80mm silenx exhaust fan at 12V.
reasonably cool n' quiet, but waiting for arrival of new Sonata to bring things down another notch.

Wow you guys have some impressive temps... I just reconnected my front fan and since it wasn't pulling in enough air I took off the front panel of my comp. Now my harddrive runs at 27 idle and 29 under heavy loads. The front fan also got my mobo down to 25 idle and 30 under heavy loads... I guess I'll end up having to cut a hole into the front since this difference in cooling is too much to pass up.
I have an Asus A8V. How accurate are the readings on it?
idle/load
CPU: 30C/~44C (load not fully tested yet)
SYSTEM: 18C/ (load not tested yet)
(temps reported by asus pc probe)
I have a 3500+ NewCastle with an XP120. Not really quiet yet as I'm waiting on some fan mates. Are these temps realistic? They seem really low.

My temps are :
idle (winamp/browsing):
CPU: 34 (fan very low) 36 fan off
Mobo: 30
HD 33
load
CPU: 45 (in fact, it's the target temp I chose for regulation, so with the fan at 100%, it sould be about 42)
Mobo : ?
HD 35
exhaust temp from the psu is 28 at the hotter spot at idle
temps are not that low, but i did very little and spent even less money for it :
noname case, no mod, not undervoltable rather cheap mobo, noname hs, no case fan, but still silent enough not to guess whether it's on or off by day. (at night, the airflow of the fortron unmodded is audible : i cannot get the psu fan out of the psu)

See my sig for specs:
Idle/Load
CPU: 35C/40C
HDD: 35C/45C
VGA: 70C/85C
NB: 70C/85C
PSU: 40C/50C
The CPU fan goes from off to 4V when the temp hits 40C. It never gets hotter than this. I'm in the process of suspending a Nexus 120mm in the middle/bottom (between HDD and VGA) to handle the HDD, VGA, and NB, as the load temps are a bit high. I really want a T-Balancer to make this thing work well....

Calibrate Your CPU Temp Reportingburcakb wrote:To find the accuracy, you might try the calibration procedure. It's somewhere in the forums, too tired to find it.

I have to agree with Ralf....numbers mean nothing without a slew of other information.
For example...this computer here is running 34C idle, 41C with CPU burn. Pretty good huh?
What I failed to mention is it's a VIA C3 @ 733mhz, the case has three 120mm fans at 12v, plus a noisy PSU fan, the side covers are off the case, and the ambient temp of this room is 18C. Now those good numbers look awful.
We need all the info to draw any conclusion.

Okies, I see your point (while the calibration thread loads)
I have one of the new Antec clear (thermally controlled) fans on the XP-120. That is what the guys put on there from the shop. My Papst 4412FGL is on the way.
The sonata stock exhaust fan is running off the sonata's powersupply off the fan only connector.
The heat from the X800XT is going out of the case with the AC silencer and there is only the Raptor drive in at the moment. Seagate on the way.
Ambient temps hover around 20C.
There is really very little in the box.
