The ultimate fan mounting method!

Post by Tyrdium » Sat Nov 27, 2004 9:44 am

I'm too lazy to take pictures, but... meh.

Anywho, I was sticking a second fan (an Evercool aluminum - not so good :?) in my case (an SLK3700-BQE), but the screws wouldn't fit, nor would the isolators, and I wrecked the ones from the stock fan putting it in the front. I looked around the house for some new screws, but couldn't find any that fit. What did I happen upon? This!

I stuck a piece in each corner of the fans, positioned them, and pushed them onto the case (stock in front, Evercool in back). I have no idea if they're dampening the vibrations any, but I'm guessing they can't be any worse than screw-mounting them. I was initially worried that the heat would loosen the tape, but they've been running for a few months with no problems. Anywho... if you ever run out of screws and isolators, try tape! :D

Actually, if you want to try isolating the fan a bit, you could make tape loops and stick some sponge in there.

Hmmm, that's a thought (actually, sandwiching the sponge could work better, since it's double-sided tape). 'course, the main noise in my system is the NV Silencer 5, so it doesn't really matter... :?

Couldn't you use those stinky spongey 3M pads that people use to stick posters to walls? Not sure if it would a fan in place though. Anyone tried it?

Ohhh, I know what you're talking about... The blue putty stuff? I'm not too sure how well it would hold, though.

well done Tyrdium :) it's good to see the spcr tradition of making do with whatever we have lying around.. proof that pc silencing hasn't yet been over-commercialised :)

davidstone28: if by 'stinky spongey 3M pads' you mean double-sided foam-tape, i have some here and it's rated for 17g per square cm. so i'm pretty confident that it'll hold a plastic fan, but as for an evercool aluminium (i used to have one, i think it was around 300g) then you'd need 17 sq cm of contact area = ~4 sq cm per corner, and that can be had quite easily given the fan's structure.

Blue Tack would work.

But I question how long any adhesive tape would last under heat conditions inside a computer case.

I had some black pvc electrical tape holding some floppy heatsink fins to a metal strut for a few months - it left a sticky residue, but it held as well as the day it was applied.

I use blu-tack like Ed suggested. The best fan mount in terms of noise would probabaly be to have it susppended with string in different directions to make it tense but this would alos be pretty untidy.

Actually, I saw a pretty good suspension using elastic cord before. Whoever it was who sent Miyori their modded SLK3700-AMB did it... :P

Edit: Oh yeah, and it had little 1 cm or so chunks of foam separating it from the case itself.
