Is this safe?

Post by Ollie` » Sat Nov 19, 2005 10:42 pm

My first atempt at the 7v mod. Looks right to me! is it? lol...
I'm wondering if its safe to run 2 120mm fans off this? and in this way?
I would be using the two 3pin conections for the fans.

Two 12cm fans? Are they identical? If so, you can also run them at 6 volts by connecting them in series (by connecting the red wire of one fan to the black wire of the other).

Yea they are both the same make and type. Both are also 12cm. Before i try your 6v thing Id like to try the one above or the one i just made. I just need to know if its safe.
I made another one

Yeah, that looks to be correct. I found however, that not all PSU's work well with the 7v trick. The 6v trick is far superior and quieter.

Must say, it's very neatly done tho. Like the silver cabling.

Oh' and....

welcome to spcr ollie!

i agree - very nice cabling. i've never actually worked with those connectors, only the wires - so my mods have never been as neat.

i'm with mathias in suggesting the 6v fans-in-series trick - i recommend you don't run the 12-5=7v trick for a prolonged period. i destroyed my antec sl350s power supply doing that =\

if you need 7v though, you can do it very cheaply and safely using a 5v1 zener diode in-line (assuming the fan is a relatively low-airflow one).

Would a Zalman fan mate 2 be safer then this volt mod?

Yes, but why spend money on something you can do yourself.

Try the 6v trick first, using the same cabling you already have.

Also have a look at the link below.

Haha I'm pretty sure that's how I ruined my Antec sl350s, too. It exploded - wasn't pretty.

Hi and welcome!

Hmmm.... those wires look just like the ones that come with the Coolermaster SUF fans? :D

exploded!? damn! didn't know a psu could actually explode. mine just gave up the ghost after bouts of instability, then when it didn't work anymore i opened it up and found lots of leaking caps.

oh well - i replaced mine with a silverstone fanless psu, no way i'm going to try the 7v trick on this one :P

I just 5v modded both my 120mm fans.... man thats nice! It says here.. http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=22943
that this mod is safe. I NEED to know if it really is!?!? Hehe. I just got a brand new Fortron SAGA 450 and i REALLY dont want it to blow up ROFL. I ran the 7v mod for like 5 mins so im not worried that it damaged anything. 5v i have now run for like 10 mins rebooting a few times to see if the fans started everytime.

Thanks :P

EDIT: Only problem now is my CPU fan seems %100 louder .. DAM you SPCR now i have to spend money on a new HSF!! :D :) :o

Great :)
The only problem i see with 5v is that a fan may not start one day. Isnt a powered fan thats not moving a short?

that looks fine.

my only concern is in the 2nd pic, the unused connector at the top right is obviously only half-connected (and with the wrong voltage) so i suggest you tape over it and write "not to be used" or something to prevent confusion later on.

yeah that cpu fan sure looks like it could use with a replacement :) if i was aircooling i'd just go for spcr's top pick which i think is a scythe ninja with a nexus fan.

 WOW! that scythe ninja is insane! lol .. i think ill go for somthing less drastic. Cheapest thing i can think of it just replacing the fan on the stock heatsink. Probably hard to find a quiet 70mm fan tho. Or one that starts at 5v. This Sempron is VERY cool. Even at a %60 overclock its never gone over 35C (according to Everest and BIOS) and idle is 22C (its in a cold room)

Hi, I've only ever worked with one A64 system and that was a Sempron 2800+ (1.6GHz, 256Kb L2 cache) with a retail box cooler on it. I found it ran fine overclocked to 1.8GHz with the stock cooler hardwired to 5v. (the cooler and mobo both had no thermal fan control) It only got to about 40-45°C running CPU burn, although the case had a side panel duct and 90mm rear fan so there was reasonable case cooling helping it out. Either way Semprons are cool, although for massive OC (1.6 -> 2.6GHz!) I would recommend something better the box cooler, an Arctic Cooling Freezer would be my recommendation. (SPCR Review) Quiet (undervolted), cheap and should fit on your board.

My Sempron 64 2800+ (1.6GHz, 256Kb L2 cache) is running at 2.5 now .. my max stable is 2.6. Its never broken 35C!!!. Prime95 for 10 hours. I could prolly turn all the fans in my case (including HSF) off and just leave the PSU fan on and it would be fine. I did however buy an ARCTIC COOLING SILENCER 64 ULTRA TC [Stock cooling itself is overkill but TOO LOUD!]. I'm Hopping for the most part it will be spinning at its lowest speed. I was gonna get an XP-90 but i couldnt justify the price for a CPU that runs so cool. However i doubt the heating vent in my room will be busted forever! lol .. hence the TC cooler :P
