Adequate dust filter?

Post by nereis » Fri Feb 17, 2006 12:05 pm

Someone has suggested using pantyhose stretched over a fan as a dust filter. Any thoughts?

It works, but not that very good.
On the other hand there might be quality differences, I've only tried no-name pantyhose.

Did they express any color preference for this task? :)

Maybe it's a matter of deniers... :)

Here's an "adequate" dust filter......panty-hose is for girls and girly-boys.

Well, since I am a girl...

If not pantyhose, I'm looking for some kind of home made solution that will filter the dust but let the air flow. I live in a windy desert-like region that gets very warm in the summer (up to 45°C)
Bluefront, your filter looks like some sort of sea-side café tent. What is it? Does it actually let any air through?

Another approach is to go without a filter, and vacuum out the dust from the inside of your case 2-3 times a year. Even with a filter, you'll probably get dust inside in any case.

Actually, I already do that. I open the case and blow out the dust every three months or so, and it's really, really bad. I'm not talking dust bunnies, I'm talking mutant ninja dust rabbits! Dust+heat turns the case into a clay oven, and I've already had several components damaged.

Bluefront is the go-to guy when it comes to filters. Have a search through his posts, you'll soon find plenty of his experiments and projects. IIRC he came to the conclusion that the best filters for the job are the ones used in cars A/C systems (after all they have to do the same job; let in air but not too much dust, otherwise the interior of the car would be covered in it!). If you can get A/C filters from a luxury car these would probably be even better.

I've been using that type filter for several years....out of a Nissan Xterra. If you seal all the little cracks/holes, dust does not get through that filter, and your case stays clean.

With a filter area of that size, you can go maybe nine months without cleaning it. Panty-hose used as a fan filter will let dust through, and will clog quicky due to a small surface area.

Yeah it's work to install one...but so is trying to clean out a dirty computer.

All right, thanks for the info. I'll see what I can get hold of.

(I guess I'll have to find another use for that drawerful of fishnet stockings  )
