Scythe "Kama Bay"

Post by Lt_Dan » Mon Jul 16, 2007 2:57 pm

Hi,
I wanted to know if the Scythe Kama Bay
[ http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/acc/0 ... etail.html ]
can be installed in my Gigabyte Poseidon case.

[ http://www.gigabyte.us/Products/Chassis ... uctID=2149 ]
since the bay rails are made for easy installment of drives.
and is there a way to control it with speedfan on my Gigabyte 965P-DS3P motherboard.

- also if any one can help me how to configure speedfan to control my Scythe Ninja fan
(it's connected to the power fan connection on my Mobo) or at least show the fan speed
(i'm using a gigabyte program - easy tune 5 - that shows it's speed)

Thanks a lot!
Dan.

With Rail System Kamabay Can be installed. I've installed KamaBay on my SLK3000B which uses rails. But you need to work bit, since rails usually require full size divice to work well, you need to tweak rails bit with so you can fit a Kamabay, like using Zipties.

Since I had Metal Rails, I used two pencils to stuck on small holes of the rails, when I had first shaprned both ends and cut them approriate height and voilá rails went perfectly and securely on their places without derailing, like before pencil mod.

Ways are many and with using brains, it can be done.

Sorry, I can't provide info if installing Kama Bay. But I am able to give you a hand of a stock fan. It's made by ADDA, which spins at 800rpm. I don't think you need to control it.

i don't plan on changing any fans now.

in the mean time i use zalman fanmate 2 to control my ninja fan.
since my ninja fan sucks air from the front of the case at 1200 rpm and the kamabay sucks air at 800, does it mater?
(it will try to suck more air then the kama can push)

thejamppa - can you post a pic of your construction?
thanks.

thanks!
it's just like a friend of mine - every project he makes (not only computers' he documents it! :))
the pencils are crazy!
i think i might be able to use my HDD rails which i removed when i suspended them, and connect them there ( but i'm not sure it would fit because they were used in 3.5" bay).
btw - is it quiet? i thought of under volting it to the same speed as my ninja (stock) - 600 rpm.
but i don't know how. i don't know if i can use speedfan fan for it and the gigabyte program doesn't seem to let me change the speed.

I gave that 800rpm adda to friend of mine. It had slight ticking at 12v but it was surprisingly quiet. I used Nexus at 7v in my KamaBay.

how do you control your Nexus?
- i can't get a nexus where i live, and an Adda or a noctua.
the only silent fan i can get here is the Scythe (also a thermal right and such, but the aren't as good).
i would like to have them both working at 600rpm.

btw, how's the Scythe "Minebea NMB Silent IC Series" fan?

I used Akasa Fan Control Jr or Zalman 7v inline resistor to do the undervolt.

Some says Minebea are pretty damn silent even at full speed. Surprising thing for a dual ballbearing fan. But I have no first hand experience from Minebea.

i see.
any other drive that's good (and not to expensive?)
- how's the : SUNBEAM 3.5" 2-channel fan controller with LCD...?

also, anyone else (...) knows the fan?

That is probably good choice too. I just don't like bling so Akasa Fan Controller ( also known as Super Flower Fan Contoller ) is perfect. Sunbeam should do its job with honour.

if his fan is like the s-flex 800 rpm, i might as well leave it at 800 for a bit more air flow.
as it suppose to be ~20db.

I have this item installed on a P180... on rails.

It works fine but the included fan makes a constant clicking noise. Crappy fan, nice solution for mounting a third 120mm fan in the front of a P180 case!

Here you go, pictures say a million words

Image

Front, the fan is an Antec Tricool LED (Red) on low setting

Rails bolted up

Other side

Completely in

Its easy to do. As for a fan recommendation, I don't know, use any one you want, There is a lot of info here about fans. Good luck!

Again, the fan used is an Antec Tricool LED. I used it because I had it already. The fan that came had a clicking noise at its operating RPM and its not adjustable in this fan (without modding of course). But maybe I just got a bad fan and you have better luck with it.

regarding the clicking - you might be right as i seen that Scythe 800 rpm was found clicking (only the 800 rpm s-flex).
how's the Scythe Minebea 1100 rpm fan? the ninja i think comes with a 1200 rpm scythe fan and it's quiet. although i devolt it with a fan mate to 600 rpm which makes it nearly silent.
as i understand you don't know about fans, so maybe someone else can help?

the railing you did is the stock method?

If by stock you mean that the parts that came with everything were used instead of buying anything else then yes.

The Kama Bay uses the hardware it came with and the rails are the ones that cane with the case.

I eyeballed it and tried mounting it till I git it right.

very nice!
so it fits good and no vibrations?

edit: i just ordered it with an extra s-flex 1200 rpm fan.
if the 800 ticks i will install the 1200 and undervolt it somehow.
it's a good solution to cool my hdd as well since i suspended them in front.
i think i'll post pics when i install it.
thanks for everyones help.

Hi there folks!

I have a question about this Scythe Kama Bay.

If I would install it vertically (taking up 3 5.25" bay space), then in normal standard 5.25" bay, can a standard 5.25" device be installed behind the Kama bay? I mean, is there enough amount of screw holes for mounting both the Kama Bay (vertically) and a 5.25" device?
I just ask this, because if the Kama Bay using the front set of screws of the case, so then with the remaining back screws in the bay, will be not enough to attach the standard 5.25 device?
(I mean the Scythe 5.25 Quiet Drive enclosure for example as a 5.25" device.)

Thanks!
