Intel D201GLY fans

Hello guys,

The blue dots 1 and 2. I want to replace the standard heatsinks as I've read they aren't really that good - But I'm kindda baffled about which heatsinks to use instead.

1) What socket is this board?
2) Which heatsink size can be used to replace the standards? 40x40mm?
3) Which fans to use?

Running one of the boards myself in a P182 case with a few 120mm fans, seems to be ok. The small heatsink (2) gets very hot as others have reported. I'd burn my fingers if I touched mine. But it seems to not do much harm to performance. The board is running beyond all my expectations.

I've been looking at some alternative heatsinks myself, but have not yet installed any. I've found a few options that could be useful, but not sure if they actually fit, since I have yet to try it myself:

Zalman ZM-NBF47

Their latest design northbridge cooler. It comes with an option to mount it using the loops found on the D201GLY2. My biggest worry would be the clearance between the northbridge and the RAM, not sure if it'll actually fit.

Thermalright HR-05 IFX [Does not fit, see post below]

This sink also comes with a solution to mount it on the loops. I think I saw a picture of someone who had 2 mounted on the D201GLY2, one for the northbridge and one on the CPU. But I've tried to find the picture again and haven't been able to. Downside is that they're pretty big, they may not fit in all cases, though my P182 case should have oceans of space for it. Main worry would be the weight of these things, 120 grams excluding fan. It comes with a spacer of some kind though.

The nice thing is you could mount an 80*25mm fan if needed. Thermalrights previous design of this sink did not (HR-05) come with options to mount on the board using loops, and was only able to mount fans using tiewraps.

---

Those 2 options are all I have come up with so far. Though I can't tell you if they actually work, I hope it helps you somewhat anyway.

I'm running Ubuntu on the machine with the board, here are some dumps of (unconfigured) temperature outputs:

Code: Select all

Code: Select all

/dev/sda: WDC WD5000AAKS-00YGA0: 32°C
/dev/sdb: WDC WD5000AAKS-00TMA0: 32°C
All idle temperatures. I've seen the CPU temperature go up to about 50-54 degrees once, but no higher than that.

I'm worried about the weight of the things as well, but mostly I'm not sure which fans are compatible with the board :S

But thx for the info about ur board, and if anyone has this board then please tell us if u've replaced the stock heatsinks and which u've substituted them for.

SZ has mentioned about 3/4 of the way down the page in this thread that he has put a pair of Noctua NC-U6 heatsinks on the CPU and northbridge of the D201GLY2. Photos are posted here. I tried the HR-05 IFX and wasn't able to make it fit (interfered with the RAM slot).

ahh cool - but derekva do you know if it's the same Noctua-U6 ? Does the Noctua-U6 fit on both the CPU and Northbridge? :s

And damn that's one expensive heatsink - They're 26€ a piece in Denmark

Just to tell you the NorthQ 3881 works perfect for both the CPU and northbridge. The fan which is shipped with the NorthQ is perhaps a bit loud, but not that much. Though I'm sure it can be more quite :)
