Quiet 140mm fan ?

Post by mertsag » Tue Mar 11, 2008 11:31 am

Hi,
I'm looking for a quiet 140mm fan for my Cooler Master Cosmos.
I found a 140mm from Cooltek, it's cheap, it's rated at 9db ( ), only 600 RPM but it's really NOT quiet... I tried with a 12v->5v adapter, but fan can't start at such a low voltage... Helping it for starting, at 5V he turns at ~500 RPM and is still too noisy for me. It's a wind noise, not motor, but has very strong high frequencies.

Other solutions I tried are :
-stock cooler master 120mm fans with 5v adapter : there's no wind noise but the motor makes a very annoying tik tik tik tik tik tik
-I found an old antec tricool 120mm in another case, tried it, it seems good at lowest speed... But I think there is better...

If I can't find any good 140mm fans, I'll try a 120mm lowest speed noctua...

When I say a good 140mm fan, I mean : A 140mm fan that would be as silent as a noctua s12-800 at 5v...

Are the Yate Loon D14SL-12 able to start at 5v ?

Aercool has decently quiet Streamliner and 140mm Silverlightning series. YL 140mm at 7v would be better than with 5v I think.

I've almost finished my 140mm intake mod in my NSK3480. So far, I've purchased the lower-speed Yate Loon, the D14SL-12, to eventually install in this position. I will undoubtedly be being trying different 140mm fans in this position over time. The fans I want to try (the only ones with reasonable paper specs for my noise demands) are:

The fan that is currently only packaged with the Scythe Orochi:
Image
140 x 140 x 25 mm
500 rpm (±10%)
29.39 CFM
10.8 dBA

The Aerocool Streamliner LED fan (Black, Silver, or UV Blue; they have the same performance specs):
Image
140 x 140 x 20 mm
1000 rpm (±10%)
54.7 CFM
19.6dBA dBA

I don't see how you could recommend Aerocool's Silver Lightning model (1500 rpm, 72 CFM, 32.72dBA) when the Streamliner is also available.

It's a short list, isn't it?

In theory, both the Scythe and Aerocool should perform better than the Yate Loon with back pressure due to the increase in fins. Despite using a 140mm as a case fan, this is what I need (the RAM slots are fairly close to and in the direct path of the fan and its airflow, respectively).

If the Cooltek is too slow for you, the Scythe probably is as well, although it may deal with back pressure better than the Cooltek.

The Cooltek 140mm is new to me, but that may because I live in the United States. Do you know of a US source? Does it only come with the case? Do you have a clear picture of it?

Hi,
Here is the manufacturer's page (it's in german but if you need a translation just ask) http://www.cooltek.de/cooltek+silent+fan+140mm.html

And a picture:

If Scythe decides to retail the 140mm, it would be a good news !
But for now, I think I'll take a 120mm noctua, waiting for noctua to make 140mm fans...

They did decide on 140mm.

How is the Yate Loon 140mm for noise? 10$ locally for me.

Silverlighting 140mm is speced 1000 rpm with 54,7 CFM.

YL's undervolted have some best noise character available on the fans.

Right you are. I was lazily using the specs listed on Performance-PCs; they have posted them erroneously. Barring cosmetic characteristics, the streamliner and silver lighting series appear to be the same.

Remember that there are two Yate Loons @ 140mm: a low speed and a medium speed. All I can tell you at this time is that when both my 1200RPM Scythe 120mm Slipstream is running (@ 811RPM), my low-speed, 140mm YL cannot be heard at all (@ 482RPM). This is what you would expect, though.
