120 mm for Fractal Define R4

Post by koxy » Mon Oct 05, 2015 5:48 am

Hi,
Due to PSU upgrade which is bit longer that old one i had to remove Antec TrueQuiet 140mm fan... and now i'm looking for replacement. Which 120mm fan is quiet as Antec Truequiet 140mm ? I use Lamptron Fan Controller and run all my incase fans at 500-540 RPM.

You could check your component temps and see if you need to bother with a bottom fan rather than replace it..

Thx Steve for answer, no temps dont bother me at all, before was 1-2 degree difference with bottom fan so i can live with that i guess.

The Scythe Gentle Typhoon are discontinued, so you might use a Noiseblocker BlackSilent Pro PL-2, if locally available at decent pricing (here it is): the Silverstone AP123 may be also considered, whether noise signature is paramount.
A much pricier option could be a Noctua IPPC, either 2k or 3k, as well as an eLoop (any brand) B12-2/B12-3.
You might also use lower speed variants of the various Noiseblocker (BS Pro/eLoop), though I think they're a bit less flexible.

Correction: I was thinking to a PWM drive for the IPPC, while you're using a Lamptron controller, so they're not suitable for your need (the IPPC fans when voltage driven shouldn't be dialed down enough low).

Yes, those should be the GTs, but take also note that apparently the lower speed, better sounding variants (AP12, AP13) are not available from that vendor.

It might be worth mentioning that Scythe now make a double ball-bearing version of the Slip Stream 120mm. According to Scythe this increases the MTBF from 30,000 hours for the previous sleeve bearing version to 350,000 hours for the ball-bearing units. They are available from sources such as Newegg, the available 3-pin fan speeds being 500 rpm, 800 rpm, 1200 rpm, 1600 rpm and 1900 rpm. From Newegg prices vary from $14.50 to $15.00.

For the sake of completeness it can be added that there is also a PWM 120DB Slip Stream with a speed range of 200 (+-300) ~ 1300 rpm that is $16.50 from Newegg.
