Need quiet video card advice
Hi All,
Are there any cards with somewhat comparable performance to the 9800 Pro 128 MB that could be quieter (IE- produce less heat)?
If not, what's the current quietest (and effective) cooling solution for the 9800 Pro? The Arctic Cooling cards are looking the best to me simply because they exhaust the hot air out of the case, but it looks like there's several options. The "ATI Silencer 1", "ATI Silencer 3", "VGA Silencer, Rev. 3", etc. Sheesh.
Thanks =)

THe VGA Silencer, Rev.3 is considered to be the best when operating at low speeds and should be compatible with the 9800 Pro.
In answer to your first question, I think that the nVidia 6800 (no Ultra, no GT) is comparable to the 9800 pro, if not a little better. Gigabyte sells a fanless 6800.
Incidentally, the 6800 series draws LESS power (and less heat) than the 9800 Pro when not being used for 3D games.

Wow. That Gigabyte 6800 looks impressive. It's priced roughly the same as a 9800 XT /w the Zalman heatsink except it performs a bit better in most benchmarks. If it produces less heat, that looks like a better choice than the 9800 Pro/XT.
Is the NV Silencer 5 for the 6800 as quiet as the VGA Silencer, Rev. 3? While I'd love to have a completely fanless heatsink, I fear it would heat up my case too much. My case already runs around 35C idle with a mere GF3 Ti500. Granted that card seems to run awfully hot despite its age. I can't touch the back of the card under the core for more than a couple seconds.

35 C idle ambient temp for ur case is ok.... i would got for the 6800 passive if i was u. i have the NV5 on a 6800 GT, the NV5 is louder than the VGA Silencer on low and high settings. it has an annoying clicking sound and i almost ripped off my ears i swear to god, haha
you could get around that, by getting the NV5 and adding a zalman fanmate on that at 5v, which makes it inaudiable.
i wouldn't worry about ur GPU temps, 6800 cooldown is at 120C

Some of the products that are listed here (in bold) might help:Glacia wrote:Hi All,

Personally, I would like to find a Geforce 6600GT that is passively cooled or has a quiet cooler on it.
My buddy and I have identical systems.. except I have a 6800 NU and he had a 9800 Pro... both 128 meg and his is not the slower atlantis version... we both benchmarked using 3dmark05
My score 3,251 stock clock 6800
His score 2,430 stock clock 9800 pro
Looks as if the 6800 non Ultra is still faster then the 9800 pro.. you also can unlock the 12 pipes to 16 to pick up a little more performance.

Got my EVGA 6800nu at a local store that posted an add in the paper.. I thought it might be a typo but it was 239.99 so I drove an hour in a damn storm to get it... I got the last new one they had on the shelf... after that it was two open box returns that were left. The same video card is 293 shipped on new egg.. so I feel like I got a decent deal. Was 259 after tax.
