The above is a direct link to a PDF of Samsung's new product brochure.. scroll towards the bottom where they have the specs on some of their new audio-friendly hard drives. 2.2 bels idle, wow.
But will we find these at the local screwdriver shop? Probably not.
Manufacturer websites are full of drives that you can't find anywhere.

Just a reminder to everyone, these numbers don't necessarily correlate with actual sound noise. This is the absolute sound energy coming out of the drive.
The 2.2 Bel figure is for the 5,760 RPM? drive. (Strange to me, since I thought they only came in 5.4kRPM and 7.2kRPM, in addition to 10k & 15k). For reference, they rate the P80 series, the Samsung we know and love as 2.7 Bels.
The rumored 200GB Samsung (the P120 family) is 2.5 Bels and will come in ATA-7 and SATA 2 flavors.
For reference, they rate their 2.5" drives as 2.2Bels as well.

125 Gig platters w/ SATA II-300 and NCQ?
Now we just have to wait for these to possibly see the light of day. I noticed on pg. 15 of the PDF they were doing the second-gens in two phases (these obviously being the second since they're native SATA II) but the stupid press release didn't give any dates . Bah. Ah well, good find anyway, technarch, it was informative while yet being vague and uninformative

SpinPoint P Series
SP2514N 250 GTB two platters
Acoustics (Average Sound Power) Idle 2.5 Bel
Random Read/Write 2.8 Bel
SP0812N 80 GB single platter
Acoustic (Average Sound Power) Idle 2.7 Bel
Random Read/Write 2.8 Bel
Somehow I find it difficult to believe their new two-platter 250 GB drives are quieter than the previous single platter Spinpoint 80 GB drives.

Interesting that Samsung also gives the same acoustical specs for the SP1614N two-platter 160 GB as the SP0812N 80 GB single platter drive:
SP0812N 80 GB single platter
Acoustic (Average Sound Power) Idle 2.7 Bel
Random Read/Write 2.8 Bel
SP1614N
Acoustic (Avg. Sound Power): Idle 2.7 Bel
Random Read/Write 2.8 Bel

I don't think so. If those numbers are based on worst case scenario, then all they have to to make it more low noise in idle is to only use Nidec motors. I do believe that a single platter HD with JVC motor can be noisier than a two platter HD with Nidec motor.Somehow I find it difficult to believe their new two-platter 250 GB drives are quieter than the previous single platter Spinpoint 80 GB drives.
I wonder if they will stop using JVC, or if we will have the never ending search for HD's with Nidec motors this time too....

that's because it's still in the news...
I have 3 Samsungs right now but I was going to change brands on my next computer for at least one drive because I wanted more space, mainly for my PVR program - I record alot of tv shows. Now that they announced this though I think I will stay with Samsung. Even if they come with JVC motors they will stiill be worth it in my opinion.

400GB?
The press release mentions that Samsung has created a 400GB drive "Samsung has succeeded in producing the 400 Gigabytes hard disk drive, constructed from three 133 Gigabytes per platter disks."
But there is no further mention of this 400GB drive in the press release or on their Web site. Strange...

Strange that there missing but then again the Samsung UK site is not always that up to date.IdontexistM8 wrote:I was having a look at the UK Samsung site and there's no mention of any hard drives whatsoever.
Have they pulled them from the British market or are they just not making any noise about them?
Plenty of places sell samsung hard drives in the UK so they must be selling, pulling out wouldn't make much sence when the company is always expanding?

The range was there until at least the back end of last year because I got the spec info on a 5400rpm 3.5" drive for my Xbox.Bitter Jitter wrote:Strange that there missing but then again the Samsung UK site is not always that up to date.

Perhaps the main European site now looks after that division?

No sign in the UK. seems the best bet for british users is ebay or direct with a german online retailer.ronnylov wrote:SP2014N:Samsung SpinPoint P120 200GB IDE ATA/133 8MB cache 7200RPM, Preliminary in stock 2005-03-15 here in Sweden:

Posted this a while ago to Samsung USA:
Got this answer today:When will the new 3.5" ATA & SATA HDD's with 200 & 250 GB capacity be available in USA and in Europe?
I think I got the answer from the wrong person, obviously not informed about the new models. Please accept our apologies, we have recently made changes to our systems and the transition and growth has resulted in unusual delays. We are working to catch up as quickly as possible to return to prompt service levels.
Unfortunately, there are no currently announced future SATA models with 200GB or 250GB capacity for the US market. We at Samsung Electronics America do not have information regarding the sale of Samsung products in Europe. We apologize for your inconvenience, and we thank you for your interest in our products.

I think this is my current favorite:
http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDis ... P2504C.htm
My bad luck: just bought a 1614C (but with Nidec )
Strange thing on the Samsung website: if you browse it using their products link, they don't appear in the list:
http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc ... ated%2fHDD
But if you search for the model number, they all arrive:
http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/index.htm

I dunno what they're up to..perhaps they are doing a sort of soft launch for the range.
Maybe it will be a one or two at a time in different regions.
Anyway, for mega-backup purposes in the meantime, I've ordered a WD3200JB. It's going to be used in an external case and won't be on that often, so any associated noise will be less of an issue. If other members reports are right it's should be pretty decent whatever.

The drives are somewhat available.
The sata versions i've seen at a polish shop, can't read polish though: http://rodan.net/eSklep/prod?id=250+sata+ii+sp2504c
Here too: http://www.toppreise.ch/prod_57126.html
The PATA drives seem to be available a bit better or were showing up earlier. Let's hope wider availability will come soon.
