Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 Rev. 3 Impressions

Post by warriorpoet » Wed Oct 26, 2005 2:53 pm

Hey guys,

Since so many of you have expressed an interest in this particular cooler, I'd feel bad keeping it to myself. Keep in mind that this is the cooler used by ASUS on their Extreme N7800 GTX TOP, I just decided to use it on a 6800GT instead of the more popular (here) Zalman VF700. In case you are confused, yes, this is also posted in the reviews section. I just wanted to respond directly to requests from people in this section.

As a peace-loving "silent" pc geek, I wish to avoid the flames of war brought down upon myself by myself through the dreaded heresy that is the double-post. Therefore, for those who are interested, especially those among you who do not wish to read the disclaimer above, I bless you with this over-obvious link to my impressions located in the "proper" location.

May God have mercy on my soul.
;)

Major revision done to improve readability and increase amount of information.

Sections added include an "apples to apples" comparison of before and after system temperatures and an update OC tweak.

People, if you buy this cooler, please use RivaTuner, or something similar to control fan speed. Anything less kills a great deal of the potential this cooler has.

Thanks for the tip Warrior. I'm getting a 6800GT next week. I like the Arctic Cooling Silencer on my 9800 enough that I would love to put one on the 6800GT. Making a mental note to use Riva Tuner.

Is revision 3 the one to get for the 6800GT AGP?

Yes, although the impression I get is that the Rev.3 is mearly a Rev.2 with a 7800 power connector. Somehow, the sample I have doesn't have the same fan problems I read about with the Rev.2, so maybe it's just a QC issue...

ENJOY!

Looking at the specs it appears the rev2 runs at 2000rpms; whereas, rev3 runs at 2500rpms. Not really an issue I suppose since i'll be able to lower the fan speed with Riva Tuner.

Another thought, and I admit to not even running a "search" on this, but I want to ask outright since we are discussing throttling of the fan with Riva Tuner:

Can a Zalman fan mate be used directly on the fan header of the 6800GT?

edit: perhaps this post answers my previous question.
