12 cm 16 dB ADDA fan -- ADDA AD1212DX-A73GL

Post by Inexplicable » Sat Feb 07, 2004 1:38 am

A local store is selling a 12x2.5 cm ADDA fan with an amazing 16 dB noise rating, 39 CFM and 1000 rpm @ 12v. It wasn't listed on ADDA's website but DX apparantely stands for ultra low speed, hypro (?) bearing.

Anybody ever heard of this?

I´ve been tempted to test one for what feels like an eternity, but haven't had the funding:( If you try it out, please let us know, I don't think it is much tested yet...

I came across this minireview (in Swedish). It doesn't say much except that the fan is almost completely silent (apparently tested at 12V), doesn't move as much air as he hoped, and doesn't start at 5V. He also though the ADDA fan's don't look very nice. :?

many of ADDA's fans aren't listed on their website. I can't find the specs for their 80mm low speed sleeve bearing fans as well :(

I had 2 ADDA fans 16dB that came with my Lian Li PC-6070SE case and I've got to say they weren't that good. At 12v they were loud and one of them clicked at lower voltages. I might have gotten bad samples but I strongly recommend against 120mm ADDA 16dB if you want an extremely quiet PC and I think you'd be much better off switching to YL or Nexus. Plus they didn't move much air either but neither does the Nexus but at least it's quiet...

I have 3 YL D12SL-12 coming in from the US next week and then both chassi fans and the ADDA PSU fan will be gone forever. Then hopefully the only "real" noise that my case will make will be from those blasted Maxtors.

Yes, I agree. I received the packege with this fan, as i mentioned above, but it wasnt nothing special, there was loud motor noise and the airflow was lover than nexus fan. But the fan design was same as the new arctic cooling 12025 fan, except some small details and different kind of plastic. I would like to know if the AC 12025 are made by Adda.

Hmmm. Some quiet Seasonic's uses ADDA fans:

The ADDA fan mentioned in this thread, seems to be very similar:

ADDA AD1212DX-A73GL versus
ADDA AD1212MB-A73GL in the (quiet) SeaSonic.

Anyone knows the difference between "MB" and "DX"?

The difference is in speed and bearing type; ADDA model numbering.

I was planning to buy Seasonic S12 PSU (until I read about Seasonic PSU problems with DFI motherboards), so I buy the ADDA fans which are used in 430W and 500W versions of their S12 PSU, the LB and MB models, as shown on the picture above. They were very cheap in one electrotechnic shop for about 5 Euro each. But the ball bearings noise is very high, higher than on other ball bearings fans that I have. Motor and airflow noise are moderate, but bearings are still audible even if I place the fan into my PSU. Maybe Seasonic uses some better pieces, but model numbers are exactly same. This means for me, that still I have to replace the fan if I will buy this PSU, with something like YL D12SM-12, which sounds to me much better.

I ordered a Ninja and received a Ninja Plus (essentially the same HS, but comes with a Scythe FAN). The "label" on that fan is : Scythe AD1212DS-A73GL(6TCL3) (Ultra Low RPM, Sleeve bearing). From the format it seems to be ADDA made, but it runs at 1200RPM (12v). It doesn't really seem to be silent to me (at least not at the nominal 12v). The main noise is generated by air-turbulance, so when I lowered the voltage its noise signature improved a lot, but the Yate Loons and the Papsts that I have seem (to me at least) to have less motor noise than the Scythe. Howver, the difference is noticeable only if I actually put my ear at about 3-4cm from the fan.

Few minutes before I read your post, I wrote to another thread about new arctic cooling fans my theory, that the AC fan 12025 should be rebranded Adda product, and that Scythe fans are looking also very simmilar to them. Your information put's more truth into my ideas.
The result for me can be, that any of these aren't good enough for really silent computer, doesn't matter on bearing type. Shame that any company doen't start to sell rebranded Yate Loon fans, like Nexus or Chieftec. I'm not able to get D12SL-12@1350rpm in my country.
