They make noise, too.

8600GT and 8600 GTS Power consumption here

First look at power consumption

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/486/15/

Can anyone comment on the accuracy of the figures??

"The idle results showed that the 8600 GT XXX Edition had the lowest idle power consumption thanks to the 80nm die shrink. The 8600 GT XXX Edition uses 14W less than the XFX 7600 GT, which is impressive for an overclocked card."

If accurate a passive 8600GT would be a great mid-range and HTPC with its claimed video abilities http://www.legitreviews.com/article/486/2/

How many watts does 8500GT use in idle?

Check xbitlabs pages, comparison with 7600gt here

According to Xbitlabs, the 8600 GTS uses only 47W: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/ ... gts_7.html
So it should be well cooled by a cheap VM-101. A TR HR-03 should cool it with minimal airflow, assuming the six-hole adapter kit works for 8600 GTS.
If the Xbitlabs figure is correct, then a *true* mid-range nVidia card, with 64 stream processors and 256 bit memory would use ~90W.

It's interesting that most of the sites are claiming that the 8800's are actually quieter than the 8600's.. though i suppose an after market cooler would fix that.

That's not the 8500GT.

Not that big a surprise, considering what the stock coolers look like (is that a 70mm blower fan on the 8800s?. Much bigger compared to the 40mm one on the 8600s)
