First place to start would naturally be the SPCR Recommended List. Then you could do a search for people's setups with your cooler of choice, like "E8400 Ninja Mini".
I ended up looking at the Mini out of curiosity. The 80mm fan is not terribly convincing, but the easy pushpins and relatively short yet stout cooler sound appealing. I'm doing an E8400 upgrade myself, naturally with a Gigabyte P35 board.

Since the E8400 isnt a hot chip you can probably use any of the heatsinks on the SPCR recommended list (as they are generally tested on much hotter chips and still perform excellently), so i guess it comes down to how much room youve got in your case and how much you want to spend. Dont forget to get a good quiet fan to go with it as well, few HS's come with real top of the line silent fans.
Xigmatek HDT S1283
if you are concerned about size then the:
OCZ Vendetta; Xigmatek HDT S983
Cheap, good performance, and with auto fan control, almost inaudible.
They need to update the list as this cooler tramples many of them listed there in most aspects. Performance, weight, installation, size.
Example, the TRUE costs around two times more than the Xigmatek, just to give you an example, but the Xigmatek comes with a fan, and performs better, no and im not comparing the TRUE's passive perf to the Xigmatek's active cooling.

I'd look at my recommendation instead...Vicotnik wrote:What kind of system are you building? What kind of case will you be using?
Hard to recommend a HS(F) with only the CPU and mobo given, the rest unknown. But the Ninja is always nice, my favorite heatsink right now and one of the best with low airflow.

More info, sorry about that.

SeaSonic 550watt S12 PSU
EVGA 8800GT 512MB
Motherboard Gigabyte GA EP35 DS3R LGA 775
WD SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB HDD
CPU is E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz
Also need to know if the following are in fact compatible;
Gigabyte motherboard (as above) GA EP35 DS3R 775 Intel P35
and
G.Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240 pin DDR2 SDRAM 800 (PC 6400).
The Gigabyte site does not list the G.SKILL RAM as compatible with this motherboard, any suggestions? I just cannot find any information anywhere that answers the question for me. Newegg has a special on this G.SKILL RAM @ $84.99US for 4GB (2 x 2GB) and I would love to grab 2 lots at that price for 8GB total. If it works and is compatible with the rest of the system!
Thanks again for all the help.

Nice price ....
Over here in Europe, despite the fact that 1$ <> €0.63, we still have to pay €82 or more for the same 2*2 bundles. Which is a PITA, just like the fact the Q9x50 processors, except for the one that costs €850 (more than one thousand of your greenbacks), are still only available in the shopkeepers' imagination. I don't understand Intel, I would sell the product in the market with the strongest currency ....
Re: Cooler E8400 Wolfdale 3 GHz
A Ninja would work in a semi passive configuration, unless you plan to overclock more than a little. My system is almost the same, picture here. The Ninja and one or two case fans at low rpm is more than enough to cool a E8400 quietly.gerry wrote:More info, sorry about that.

If low noise is a priority I would also go with an Accelero S1 on the 8800GT.
I see no reason for it not to work. I have no experience with G.Skill myself, but from what I hear they are good.gerry wrote:Also need to know if the following are in fact compatible;

Yeah, if he's going to do the basic 3->3.6 OC, and run his RAM at 1:1, the Ninja should be more than enough. Even the OC should only bump his temps up 1-2C, I'd think.Vicotnik wrote: A Ninja would work in a semi passive configuration, unless you plan to overclock more than a little. I'm using 2 800RPM Slipstreams currently in my P182 (1 exhaust, 1 on the back of the HD cage to blow on my Accelero S1), although I may stick another Slipstream on the Ninja as a failsafe, since Winter is turning into Spring here.

Re: Cooler E8400 Wolfdale 3 GHz
Funny you should mention it, because I've been playing with an E3110 & a Ninja recently. I'll post more info later, so here's a summary.NTNgod wrote:Yeah, if he's going to do the basic 3->3.6 OC, and run his RAM at 1:1, the Ninja should be more than enough.
My CPU overclocks to 3.6 on stock voltage, so that's where I plan to run it for a while. Under 2x Prime95 load, the system pulls 110W AC with a 300W Super Tornado A3. Speedfan holds a Yate Loon at 500rpm under load, and the CPU maxes at 50C. This is while running open case in a 20-21C room.

I'm using G.skill (listed in sig) right now with my Gigabyte P35. I have had no problems with it.gerry wrote:More info, sorry about that.
