I received some extra ramsinks today (nice service from Arctic Cooling) and am planning to finally put my S1 rev2 on my 4870 (hate the standard fan). My previous card, a 8800GT, was cooled passively with the S1.
I'm wondering if I can do the same with my 4870 or is this out of the question? I got a Antec P182 case with on 120mm fan on the bottom blowing onto the PSU, and two 120mm fans right above the vidcard blowing through the Ninja CPU cooler and one big output fan at the bottom.
My pc is nearly noisefree except from the card and I don't have any spare 120mm fans to put on it. What do you think?
2nd question: can I put the Arctic S1 ramsinks on the VRM's too? Or do I make sure not to touch any other think (short circuit?).
MSI 4870 512 + S1 rev2 : passive cooling possible?

I wouldn't risk it. I'd just get another 120mm fan and attach it to the top drive cage. Then monitor temps to see if you can get away without it.lapino wrote:

To your second question I'm sure it's fine to put the s1 ramsinks on the VRM's. There is thermal tape/padding on the bottom of the sink so it won't short. I have done this with my 3850 and it's fine. Avoid touching anything other than the mosfets/vrm of course but I think you'll find that the other components sit below the mosfet/vrm so they won't touch.
Hey zikje, i'm also looking for an appropriate heatsink for my 4870. So far it's between the Accelero S1 Rev2, Thermalright T-Rad 2 and Thermalright hr-03. Having a hard time so far... i think i might end up going with the accelero since it costs too much. It'd be cool to see some reviews on the hr-03 or the trad2zikje wrote:I'm also thinking about this configuration but have read on the Internet many problems, especially with the VRM. What is your exact configuration of heatsinks and coolers, and where is this VRM located?
