The specs indicate that the minimum fan speed is 330 RPM, even at "0" output. A 330 RPM fan is so close to completely silent that I doubt the difference with the X-series is material.JazzJackRabbit wrote:I wonder if Enermax will also operate fanless below 150W.
Overall it looks great! The internal pictures look similar to the Seasonic ("Where did my power supply go??"). The 500W model should have slightly better efficiency for a typical PC than the Seasonic, but the overall efficiency curve looks like the X-series.
Hopefully these new models will bring some sanity to the pricing for these high-efficiency PSUs. I too am looking forward to Mike's review!

Well, they're not really comparable to the Seasonic X, as that unit has a totally different layout that I'm pretty sure will be much more efficient at low loads (below 20%), plus it's designed to supply more total power. The Enermax one will probably cost as much or more than the Seasonic at the higher wattage, as they don't have to interfere with the current Pro/Modu 82+ lineups: I don't even hope for them to be price/performance winner units!
Depends. My PSU also has one really slow moving fan on very low loads (<150W) it seems, yet at the slow turning speed it seems there is an irritating wobbling fan noise. You can barely hear the air movement, but you can definitely hear the irritating fan bearing which, no matter how I try and isolate it from the chassis, still drives me insane.cb95014 wrote:The specs indicate that the minimum fan speed is 330 RPM, even at "0" output. Also, the fan in Modu87+ is 140mm big, so it's going to be louder than 120mm in Seasonic.SinnerG wrote:Depends. 140mm fans have 135mm impellers, there's no "conspiration" to produce strange fans. It simply depends on what the manufacturers want to measure.
There's nothing that leads to such a drastic conclusion, fan size is not directly dependant on noise, only on noise/airflow ratio. And the Seasonic uses a quite fast-spinning fan to keep it cold at higher loads and temperatures.JazzJackRabbit wrote: Also, the fan in Modu87+ is 140mm big, so it's going to be louder than 120mm in Seasonic.

Review of Modu 87+ 700W :
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/900
Peak efficiency at c. 140W - 290W (120V mains)
Does not quite reach 87% at full load of 700W with high room temp
Low ripple & noise
Not a single mention about acoustic noise. Sigh.

In the case of the Modu87+ and Pro87+ for example Enermax wanted a larger fan; 140mm is the largest possible in an ATX power supply today and it's already patented, so Enermax decided to make a 139mm fan themselves.

Today I also saw the Anandtech review including fan speed and noise testing. The fan speed can be as low as 330rpm in idle and even 900rpm at full load, though it's a 14cm fan and the noise can be larger given the same speed. Can't wait for SPCR's review, since Enermax has a 500W model suitable for silencer's requirements.
