Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
Wow, way to go Kingwin =P. Price is a little steep for me though, maybe if it goes on sale as often as the Seasonic X-650 does...
Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
Wow, that's some seriously high efficiency there. Under the hood the layout looks super-clean, and with the platinum efficiency, even the small heatsinks are certainly going to have no problem with the VERY little heat this thing produces.
Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
That's some pretty epic efficiency... though I have to say I'd be leery about buying a power supply from a maker I haven't heard of before. What's Kingwin (or Superflower)'s reputation like?
Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
Ah more confirmation this superflower platform is pretty damn good Jonnyguru has some reviews of the same platform and they're quite positive.
I think everyone is a little concerned how lax the fans are though as you also mentioned. Even with such high efficiency, air cooling helps when components get over 50C in temp. I'd figure there'd be no problems at all up to around 300-350w, it just feels less comfortable when it's fanless at 450w+. And the heatsinks aren't exactly huge.
Either way still something I'd recommend for the ultimate efficient + quiet psu that isn't the Fanless X-series.

Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
Holy crap! That looks like a pretty sweet power supply after all.
I was wondering where were all the platinum models, it's been almost a year since I first heard from the platinum award, I recal it was a Fortron first?
I have never even considered of buying anything Kingwing has made, but this might really be the first to put on serious consideration.
At first I was looking at the 1300rpm speed of the 140mm fan and thought that there's no way this is going to be silent enough for me or for any spcr award.
Only to be shocked to see the db graph... "what, is the fan broken already?" ... "16db at 550watts!!?? No way!!"
Now if they would only sell it for around 100€ in europe.

This states that the warranty is 5 years. A few other review sites have been stating 5 years as well, so maybe that's something that you'd want to revise?
Nice to see proper SPL numbers for this unit.

Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
I see that Super Flower has obtained platinum certification for 4 other designs: a 450W, two 500W, and a 1000W.
Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
how much is the 450?Luke M wrote:I see that Super Flower has obtained platinum certification for 4 other designs: a 450W, two 500W, and a 1000W.
also 14cm isn't that rather large for a fan designed to be mostly fanless?
Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
Only the 550W is available so far.dan wrote:how much is the 450?Luke M wrote:I see that Super Flower has obtained platinum certification for 4 other designs: a 450W, two 500W, and a 1000W.

Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
AFAIK, Super Flower is not distributed in US/Canada, and as mentioned in the review, I found no other Platinum models for sale anywhere (on the web). As for the fan size, does it matter? The proof is in the noise, and there's hardly any.dan wrote:how much is the 450?Luke M wrote:I see that Super Flower has obtained platinum certification for 4 other designs: a 450W, two 500W, and a 1000W.

not all atx cases can accommodate the increase fan size/psu form factor.MikeC wrote:AFAIK, Super Flower is not distributed in US/Canada, and as mentioned in the review, I found no other Platinum models for sale anywhere (on the web). shouldn't 80 platinum be called 90 plus?
Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
90%-92%-89% are the requirements of the 80Plus Platinum certification, so I would argue that it doesn't make that much sense to call it 90Plus when one of the load levels doesn't need to be 90% or over.

Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
A 140mm fan can be fitted with virtually no increase in depth to conventional ATX12V form factor PSU. That's not why this PSU is bigger than normal -- it's the additional depth. But given the general layout of even totally old school cases, there would be very few ATX cases unable to fit the additional depth of this PSU.dan wrote:not all atx cases can accommodate the increase fan size/psu form factor.
Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
Yea I suspect if they add an other level that isn't 80plus unobtanium, it might be 90plus next. Of course that probably depends if they have the trademark for 90plus.Garak wrote:90%-92%-89% are the requirements of the 80Plus Platinum certification, so I would argue that it doesn't make that much sense to call it 90Plus when one of the load levels doesn't need to be 90% or over.

Excellent review, as per usual. Rock steady PSU, it would seem.

I figured "high quailiky" was like truthiness - it's a component you feel should be great so therefore it is.NeilBlanchard wrote:Excellent review, as per usual. Rock steady PSU, it would seem.

Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
If "most" where Nippon caps, what where the rest of the caps? I'm guessing they're not bad, since there where no complaints, but it does make you wonder what they are.
Re: Kingwin Lazer Platinum 550W Power Supply
The efficiency is insane, however so is the price. I guess with no competition though it's kinda expected the price will be high.
I'd probably pick one of these up in a year or two when the price drops to $70 or $80 when competition is stronger. That is unless something better shows up.

Super Flower shows a 500W fanless power supply (SF-500P14FG):
