Microsoft has now fully announced Copilot+PCs, with the first wave available to pre order at various major retailers. Microsoft states that Copilot+PCs are “the fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever built” thanks to the built-in AI hardware and support for AI features. These are considered an entirely new class of PCs and Microsoft has taken a “partner-first” approach bringing in the same OEMs you will be familiar with. Copilot+ PCs will be capable of 40+ TOPS, all-day battery life, and will have access to advanced AI models.

What is Microsoft Copilot+PC?

Copilot+PC is Microsofts next advancement, bringing AI into laptops and other devices. Think of Copilot+ as paperclip on steroids, at its core, Copilot+ will enable users to accelerate productivity and potentially unbind creative restrictions. The new architecture will leverage the power of the CPU, and GPU together with a new high-performance neural processing unit. These will be connected to LLMs and SLMs bringing more power and efficiency for AI workloads. Copilot+PC’s will include:

  • 16GB RAM
  • A minimum of 256GB SSD storage
  • An Integrated NPU

Check out more specifications on select models below:

Microsoft claims Copilot+PCs will outperform Apple’s Macbook Air 15″ by up to 58% in sustained multithreaded performance. These devices can deliver up to 22 hours of local video playback or 15 hours of web browsing on a single charge.

Copilot+PC features

The upcoming devices that feature Copilot+ will all have “the power of AI at your fingertips”. New models will come with a new Copilot key.

Recall

Recall will allow you to slide back in time to a previous point on your device. It doesn’t matter what the application is, with Recall you can virtually access various moments. Microsoft is advertising this feature like your PC has a photographic memory and it will assist you when you just can’t quite remember where something is or how something was, all in real time. Recall can potentially eliminate the need for the reminders we set or having hundreds of browser tabs open so we never lose where we are.

With Recall you will be able to search with descriptive language and it will quickly find web pages you have browsed, chat logs from apps such as Discord, and so on. These “snapshots” are all saved locally on your device and can be deleted whenever you desire.

Your favorite apps will have AI weaved into them

During Microsoft’s showcase, they zoomed in on Adobe and DaVinci Resolve Studio. They are partnering with some of the biggest applications on the planet and stated they plan to leverage the power of NPU to deliver these innovations.

Adobe’s flagship applications will be part of this desktop revolution (Photoshop, Lightroom, and Express are available now, and Illustrator, Premiere Pro and more are coming this summer). Software such as Davinci will benefit from the effortless application of visual effects to objects and people using NPU acceleration. Microsoft also talked about djay pro, LiquidText, Cephable, and Capcut, which you can read more about here.

Copilot for Xbox & PC

Microsoft plans to use Copilot to reimagine how we seek help in games. No longer will you need a game manual or written guides – Copilot will be able to answer any game-related question in mere milliseconds. We aren’t just talking about game mechanics and button mapping, Copilot will also give the user tips and tricks at the drop of a hat. Just like the features above, it will leverage the NPU, meaning your GPU can remain focused on FPS.

Copilot+PC laptop and devices available for pre order

Pre orders are already live over at Best Buy from some of the OEM partners. Some specific models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Microsoft are already good to go.

Microsoft Copilot+PC release date

New Copilot+PCs, as shown above, will be fully available from June 18th. Devices will start at $999 and are currently advertised as “up to $200 less than similar spec’d devices”. As mentioned, some of the above are already available for pre order (June 18th launch) but we are still waiting for launch dates on a few others.

Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite & X Plus

The initial Copilot+PC’s are launching with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus, which are claimed to feature leading performance per watt. Early benchmarks appear to confirm the performance and battery life claims but as it stands these chips have only been reviewed by one third party (Signal65).

Only time will tell if the next generation of laptops will be worth it but early signs are promising. Everything now features AI and AI-related branding, but if it can revolutionize how we work and use computers, then Microsoft and its partners are strongly out of the gate.
